Artist James J. Vullo, lifetime resident of Buffalo New York's West Side
had devoted himself to its exploration.
He
was drawing in the streets at the age of 8 and painting by 14. The barge
canal, river boats, rock retaining wall, and old factories were his first
inspirations. At the foot of Hudson Street Jimmy worked by the hour in
watercolor and discarded any unsuccessful works by sailing them into the
river. Although he had devoted himself to a relatively small geographic
area, he had exhibited widely.
He
has taken numerous national, international and local competitions. Jimmy
had attributed his recognition in other area to a genuine love for the
locale in which he worked and his ability to achieve a universality in
his compositions.
He
is represented in Permanent Collections including the Albright-Knox Gallery.
The Munson-Williams Proctor Institute and the Birmingham Museum of Art,
to name a few. His paintings can be seen in collections throughout Western
New York, significantly at the Burchfield Penny Art Center at Buffalo
State College. He was a Professor of Fine Arts at Buffalo State College
for over 30 years.
Jimmy
Vullo began to embrace his durable cubic expressionistic style in the
1950's. In these arrangements of stacking buildings and open spaces
he projects the specific mood of the place, just as any American scene
painter would... and yet never sacrifices the more or less independent
meaning of the abstract patterning.
Every
time you look at one of Jimmy Vullo's large striking 1960's black
and white landscapes you will definitely be forced to reconsider your
comfortable classifications. Done in acrylic on heavy watercolor paper.
Average size of 25" x 36" -- some larger.
James Vullo's statement concerning his black and white acrylic drawings:
"I'm trying to create a very dynamic and moving arrangement of black
and white forms which happen to be landscape form or shapes thereby making
an effective and moving type of drawing"

1970's - 1990's
He painted loose bold watercolors and did large drawings freely with all
the Enthusiasm and Confidence an Artistic lifetime brings! "I see
this time as a Grand Finale of his Wonderful Artistic Life."
In his retirement years kite flying and kite building also became a fun
part of his life, along with the joy he found in writing Puns such as;
"Don't worry about middle age, you'll outgrow it." My Uncle
Jim craved and enjoyed every moment of life and then he shared it with
those who cared to learn." Quotes from niece Josie
Ann Vullo-Hyde
